Why i'm proud to be an American

John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Little did he know theses words would impact the country over the next four decades. Men and women in our armed forces are fighting so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have.
The battles we fight today are different then those of years ago. Today we fight so that not only can we have democracy, but also people in other countries can have democracy. Democracy gives people the power to choose their own government and its leaders. People have the right to make their own laws and to establish who will enforce those laws. The fight today is also for independence. Independence is something that people should celebrate all over the world. Many countries deny their people independence. Our forefathers established the Declaration of Independence which still holds strong today. We believe in the Declaration and Americans lose there lives everyday to defend it.
My Grandfather served in the army. He fought in Vietnam and Korea. He was the proudest American I have ever met. He taught my brother, my sister and I to respect the flag and the National Anthem. He told us that the flag and the National Anthem are symbolic of the men and women who have fought for our country. It is important that we stand at the anthem and cover our hearts.
Now that my Grandfather has passed away, I think of him when the National Anthem is played and I cover my heart and salute the flag. He was proud to be an American… and so am I.
