To Hear or Not to Hear...
"Oh she will be loved, oh she will be
loooooved''... There he goes again. The guy sitting next to me on the
train is blasting his ipod. It is so loud!! However, there is one thing
he does not seem to know? That ipods can actually effect your hearing.
It is possible that the famous iPod may leave you using the
unpopular hearing aid. Research is starting to show that many children
and teens who listen to their iPod too loud will suffer from hearing
loss in the future.
Can you hear me?
Many people think that hearing their ipod so loud
won't do them any damage but what they don't know is that the damage
will appear in the future." The number of kids with hearing loss is
dramatically increasing and the culprit seems to be noise'', said
(Audiology clinic) OHSU audiologist Billy Martin (dated 2005).
More teens seem to be developing small symptoms to hearing problems. A recent study in the journal Pediatrics
has found that 61% of teens said they had experienced ringing in the
ears. The reason the teens are experiencing the ringing in the ears is
because the teens are listening to their ipod too loud. IPods are the
ones taking action and fast. Teens should be more careful about how
loud they listen to their iPod.
Some problems that ipods cause to the human body are ear related. For example
What are they thinking?
Many people know what iPods can do to them yet
they continue doing the wrong thing. " I guess I'm listening to it like
8-9/10 of the way up which probably isn't great but that's what I like
to do'', band member Dan Gorman was asked by audiology clinic. Teens
can do the right thing but still have fun; they can listen to their
ipod at a reasonable volume.
Will parents take action?
Hey parents you CAN do something too. Parents can
speak to their child about the damage ipods can cause to them
- 1. If nothing works parents can remove the ipod from their child for a while
- 2. Parents can also put a combination and only let their child use
it when they want to let them or when they are ready to listen at a
reasonable volume
- 3. Parents can also put a combination on a certain volume
Teens can save themselves
Teens and other ipod listeners can still save
themselves. They can still have fun while being cautious at the same
time. A study in the Pediatrics journal found that only 14% of teens use ear protection, teens could increase that number. They can defeat the hearing aid.
Teens could start using headphones that have hearing
protection. On the other hand, teens can choose to put a certain volume
on their ipod. In conclusion, teens can stop hearing damage caused by
Ipods in many ways.
