"Holes" and "Thank You Ma'am"

Both of the great stories “Holes,” and “Thank You Ma’am” have a similar theme. The theme that both stories have is that bad things could lead to positive outcomes.

The theme in the story “Thank You Ma’am” is that bad things can lead to positive outcomes. For example in the story, when Mrs. Jones caught Roger she dropped and kicked him in his body. She also dragged Roger by the neck while heading toward her shared house. However, when they actually got to her house, well at least her part of the house, Roger gets many different luxuries. The luxuries that Roger gets are a nice cooked meal, a wash in the face, 10$ to buy the shoes he wanted, and probably a very meaningful lesson from Mrs. Jones. So even though Roger fails to steal Mrs. Jones purse and get away with it he still got many luxuries and a deep lesson all from Mrs. Jones.

Now in the story “Holes” the theme is also that bad things could lead to positive outcomes. For example in the book when Stanley takes “Sweet Feet’s” famous and expensive sneakers he is sent to a juvenile facility camp for three months. However going to camp green lake lead to Stanley loosing a ton of weight from digging holes in the very hot weather, and also in some way he also gained some real guts. Also going to camp green lake lead to Stanley and Zero finding the missing treasure of kissing Kate Barlow, and lifting the awful curse that was put on his family for generations. So at the end the bad things that happened to Stanley all lead too a really positive outcomes.

Not also did the two stories have many similarities but the characters also had a lot of similarities. Characters like Zero and Roger are very similar. They are similar because both boys are poor African American children who had very hard lives. Both of the children’s families weren’t around. So the boys had to commit crimes to get what they needed to live their lives. So “Holes” and “Thank You Ma’am” have character similarities also.

You know a connection that I could be made is a text to world connection. The text to world connection is that how poor children in the world need to commit crimes to survive in the streets.
