Holes and Thank You Ma’am have a similar theme. A theme that best fits Holes and Thank you Ma’am is” bad things can lead to positive outcomes”.
For example, in Holes Stanley took the shoes that didn’t belong to him and was sent to Camp Green Lake. Although he was sent to Camp Green Lake he broke the curse that has been in his family for generations, and his father finally was successful with an invention for foot odor.
Another example, of how bad things can lead to a positive outcome is in Thank You Ma’am when Roger tried stealing Mrs. Jones purse and was dragged to her house. Even though Roger tried stealing her purse, she didn’t punish him but gave him food to eat, let him wash his face, and gave him ten dollars to buy those blue suede shoes he wanted.
Roger and Stanley have similarities as well. They both come from a poor family because Stanley couldn’t afford camp and Roger can’t afford the shoes he wanted. They have differences too because Stanley is big and fat while Roger is small and has dark skin. I know that because in the story it said that Stanley has no friends in school and was bullied by other people.
I have a text-to-self connection with the story “Thank You Ma’am” because when Roger tried stealing Mrs. Jones purse, she didn’t punish him. When I tried sneaking something to eat, my mom would not punish me, if I never did it again. This is why I think that” bad thins can lead to positive outcomes”.
