Say YES to Electronics in School           

     Every student looks forward to their lunch period because it’s the only period where they can actually relax during their hectic school day. Their first instinct is to pull out their music or their games. But wait…they can’t because one of the school authorities will take it away, how much of a bummer is that? Schools should let students relax for at least one period a day. Students should be allowed to use electronic devices during free periods such as lunch without getting in trouble by school administration.                     

     Students should be able to use electronics in school because all they do is work, work, work. Working all day can be very crucial to the mind of students and they should have the opportunity to relax and listen to music they like and play the games they enjoy. Students need a break throughout the school day to unwind and relax. Studies prove that students are more focused and alert when their minds are relaxed. 

     Another reason students should be able to use electronics in school is because built up stress can lead to nervous breakdowns and students failing tests. With all of the pressure that comes from tests, quizzes, and etc. students need other activities to occupy themselves and keep away from breakdowns and stress overflows. Electronics also open up concentration and keenness within students. Concentration leads to better grades and better grades lead to a better educated generation and society.

     One point that the other side makes is that electronics are a distraction to students while teachers are teaching in a classroom. A Houston principle says “Cell phones are basically a cheating tactic; they can text-message each other answers. They can even send pictures to each other and it won’t even make a noise.” Another point the other side make is that electronics are causing more problems in school than just listening to music and playing games. “Electronics in schools are causing fights between kids and increasing violence with students between peers and their teachers” says City Councilmen.

     The other side makes an interesting point however, if cell phones are believed to be an easy cheating tactic, then what are ‘cheat sheets’ supposed to be? The teachers need to be more aware, they shouldn’t blame cheating on cell phones. Electronics don’t cause as many problems as the rules AGAINST electronics cause. Students fight with teachers because the teachers take away electronics. If the school had a set of rules on electronics that let students use them at certain times in the day, the school wouldn’t have this problem.

     There are a variety of opinions on whether students should be able to bring and use electronics in school or not but in the end, students should have the ability to bring and use their electronics. The administration should set up a system of rules based on the use of electronics. The other side makes fair points concerning the matter but the problems they bring up can be taken care of through rule enforcement and Faculty-Student understanding. Therefore students should be able to use to electronics during lunch because after all, we all need a break!
